Huck yourself bravely towards fear

Taking a deep breath of fresh mountain air, you stand over your bike and gaze down the steep granite slope leading into a narrow clearing of trees. You have two options. Do you choose to remain stuck in fear or do you send it bravely into the unknown?

Humans have evolved through risk taking; when we take our first step, we risk falling down; when we learn to ride a bike, we risk crashing; when ask someone on a date, we risk being rejected. As tough as it is, if we don’t lean into the fear and discomfort, we don’t progress.

What to do when your melon gets whacked

This summer an unexpected waterskiing accident left me with severe whiplash, five stitches in the back of my skull, a compressed occipital nerve, a puncture in my neck that nearly hit an artery, a punctured eardrum and a pretty nasty concussion.

The only thing for certain is something unexpected is going to happen

As the early morning glow seeped down the hillsides and across the lake, I walked down the dock with my ski in hand and an excited grin across my face. I hopped into the boat and heard, “you’re up girl!”—I guess it was apparent I could hardly wait to get swerving.

As I began carving across the wake, I heard nothing but the sound of breaking water behind me and hum of the boat. I settled into a rhythm on my ski and did several passes before taking a breather and going once more—so stoked to be on the water again. Continue Reading…

Wild & Fiery Jerk Tacos with Mango Coulis

Don’t be a hangry jerk

Jamaican jerk soft tacos with mango coulis are bursting with flavour, super easy to make and will retard your hanger pangs instantly.

When you’re in the throes of hanger, you’re tempted to reach for that Snickers—stop! Junk foods induce spikes in blood-glucose levels that come crashing down fast. Instead, think nutrient-rich, natural foods and proper meals that help satisfy hunger for as long as possible.

The Scotch pepper found in jerk spice contains capsaicin. Capsaicinoids trick the brain into thinking you’re being burned—owee! The brain responds by releasing endorphins and dopamine. This triggers a sense of euphoria similar to a “runner’s high”. Capsaicin is also used for manufacturing pepper spray—perfect, now when you see that damn bear on the Mashiter you can throw a taco at her.

Zesty Flow: Timelessness through authenticity

Tapping into your flow state

Being in flow during sport is an incredible feeling. There is an absence of fear, a weightlessness and an effortless rhythm—pure joy. In flow state, there’s no judgement or ego. You’re centred and totally connected with everything. Conversely, when you’re not in flow you’re out of balance and fear enters the body. You tighten up and it doesn’t have the same graceful and fulfilling rhythm, your timing is off and you feel resistance.

Flow isn’t just an experience for athletes. It’s ubiquitous. You can experience flow any situation. And more flow is proven to increase life satisfaction. If you want to feel happier, more alive and have deeper connections, you might want to tap into flow.
