Wild & Fiery Jerk Tacos with Mango Coulis

Don’t be a hangry jerk

Jamaican jerk soft tacos with mango coulis are bursting with flavour, super easy to make and will retard your hanger pangs instantly.

When you’re in the throes of hanger, you’re tempted to reach for that Snickers—stop! Junk foods induce spikes in blood-glucose levels that come crashing down fast. Instead, think nutrient-rich, natural foods and proper meals that help satisfy hunger for as long as possible.

The Scotch pepper found in jerk spice contains capsaicin. Capsaicinoids trick the brain into thinking you’re being burned—owee! The brain responds by releasing endorphins and dopamine. This triggers a sense of euphoria similar to a “runner’s high”. Capsaicin is also used for manufacturing pepper spray—perfect, now when you see that damn bear on the Mashiter you can throw a taco at her.

Print Recipe
Serves: 2 Cooking Time: 40min

  • Note: Fresh scotch bonnet peppers can be hard to find, and hard to identify properly because they look awfully similar to the mexican habaneros. So for this recipe I'm recommending my favourite jerk spice, available at Nester's, Whole Foods, Fresh Street and a few others. Walkerswood Jerk Spice
  • 1 cup tofu, cubed
  • A few mini tortillas
  • 1-2 Tbsp Walkerswood Jerk Spice
  • 1 Tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 ripe mangos or 1 cup Bremner's Mango, thawed
  • 1 knob ginger, grated fine
  • 2 tbsp fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 c coconut milk
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric
  • 3.4 c shredded red cabbage
  • 3/4 c mixed greens
  • 1 avocado
  • 1/4 c sliced spring onion

Tofu Depending in your tolerance for heat rub 1-2 tbsp jerk spice on the cubed tofu

Dollop some coconut oil on a cast iron pan and arrange the tofu

Bake @ 350°F for 25-30min.

Mango Coulis Peel and cut ripe mangoes or use thawed Bremner's mango and toss into the blender

Squeeze in the juice of ginger, coconut milk, water, turmeric into the blender or food processor purée ingredients until smooth.

Slice up the red cabbage & cube the avocado. Set aside.

To Plate

Place your tofu in your tortilla. Top with veggies and drizzle your mango coulis on top! The more the better for taming the heat 😀
