Nostalgia for the past

An impossible yearning, a longing to go back as life pushes us ever forward. As we sit reminiscing over a particular scent, a ritual that once promised our biggest smile of the day, the poignant sound of a song, or the sight of a certain coffee mug that launches us into a time gone by. Welling up inside, the nostalgia for the past can at times overwhelm you with a sense of loss that knocks the wind out of you. Continue Reading…

Friends Through Shell & Back

Life’s Tug-of-War

Tugging on Kula’s limp and scraggly turtle as she hands it back to me. One eyeball left, a gaping hole where she extracted all the stuffing from, but the turtles serif-stitched name Jamaica still reads strong on its shell.

This has become our new pastime. Turtle tug-of-war. I wonder if she hates me… the question hurls my heart into persistent restlessness… Continue Reading…

Pooh’s Zesty Wisdom

Lately I’ve been revisiting the old classic Winnie-the-Pooh—a beloved and well-worn book that’s been gracing many children’s bedrooms for decades, and I’ve realized that no matter what age you are, the tales from Hundred-Acre Wood are truly evergreen.

Pooh and Piglet teach us so much about what friendship is and how it’s expressed. Even through the most blustery of days, the answers are there on how to always walk beside each other… Continue Reading…

Your vibe attracts your tribe

Jetting off for my first women’s waterski week in Florida, I was excited, but not sure what to expect. We would be five ladies, staying together in a house for five days—eeek, this could be estrofest drama! I only knew one of them, my friend and World Champion Waterskier, Whitney McClintock Rini, who had asked me to come down to ski, and do the plant-based cooking for the week. Continue Reading…

Volunteering: The Cure for a Long Face

Namasneigh

Arriving at Second Chance Cheekye Ranch, Sarah and I toss our phones in the truck and I set off down the long dirt road to the barn. We’ve both had a rough week, and are ready to do some “meditative shit shoveling” as I call it.

Arriving at the first paddock, we are greeted by a few horses poking their heads over the fence. For having such long faces, I’m always surprised how these animals are so sweet and gentle. Being from a rescue ranch, many of these horses have experienced a variety of trauma; from neglect and abuse, to rejection for being old, lame or injured. Continue Reading…
