You are what you eat
You may know that eating a variety of nutrients is important for your health and wellness, but what you may not realize is how what you eat also influences your spiritual health and well-being.
Ayurvedic practitioners, ancient Greeks and buddhists alike have been aware for thousands of years that food has an energetic effect on the body, mind and spirit. The more nutritious and pure the foods, the more conscious and in sync your are with the world around you, the attuned you are with your heart, your intuition; and the more you can interpret your souls wisdom.
Science meets woo-woo
You may be thinkin’, “This is getting a little woo-woo for me lady”, but I assure you these facts have been nerd-checked. Science accepts that the universe, including us, is made up of energy, and all matter is in a state of vibration. We’re made of energy and our vibration is simply the movement of our energy through space. Each person has a unique vibration that is your personal energy frequency—or in hippie terms, your soul’s signature.
Good vibes, bad vibes
You don’t have to be livin’ in the 60’s, high on LCD with a Grateful Dead album playing to feel that certain people radiate positive energy, and others negative energy. “Yeah man, what’s that all about?”, you ask. Well, these good or bad vibes are all subtle energy frequencies.
Quantum physicists study the energetic effect when atoms collide. What they see is that when two atomic waves meet, they either meet in sync, creating a harmonious effect, or they meet out of sync, creating a destructive effect. Guess what, we are made of atoms. (And so is food).
By the law of attraction, you magnetize or repel all experiences, people and circumstances into your life depending on what you’re vibrating in sync with; good or bad. A high oscillating vibration attracts more spiritually uplifting, or positive experiences in life. A low vibration attracts the opposite.
“If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration”— Nikola Tesla
When you think about something vibrating very slowly or quickly, what comes to mind? You probably feel a lot of energy and excitement with high vibration and you feel sluggish and sad with low vibration. The concept of “raising your vibration” means literally vibrating at a higher frequency—love, kindness and compassion are all emotions that vibrate at a very high speed. Greed, fear, hate and depression vibrate at a lower frequency.
Turnip your vibration
Every time you eat something, you absorb that food’s energy into your body. When our energy meets another’s, it can either meet harmoniously or destructively. Thus having a direct impact on the quality of your overall health and your vibration. Junk food, processed food and meat from slaughtered animals has a low-vibrational quality that will damage your cells and your energy—regardless of how organic the cow was, or how free-range a chicken may have been, when you consume animal flesh, you ingest their vibration at the time of death: fear, terror and despair. Not to mention the spike in cortisol stress hormones.
Eating pure, nutritious, plant-based and high-vibrational foods will purify and nourish your body so that it works in harmony with your mind and spirit. Search for vibrant colours, freshness and variety. Some high vibe foods you can eat are leafy green vegetables like kale, spinach, beet greens, dandelion greens and arugula, organic fruits such as freshly-picked apples and blueberries, fresh herbs like cilantro and rosemary, raw nuts and seeds like walnuts and pumpkin seeds, and other plants such as avocado, yams, beets, fermented veggies and algae such as spirulina and chlorella.
There are many methods for raising your vibrations, including exercise, meditation and spending time in nature, but eating highly nutritious food in its pure, raw form is one of the easiest and most tangible ways to do this.
Cook with love
Even preparing and cooking can have an effect on a foods energy vibration. When we create a meal we inject energy into the food and our spiritual intentions, mood and vibrations can make the meal sacred.
There’s a sensation I think a lot of people have experienced—the delight and euphoria when something has been cooked by someone who puts good energy into their meal, with the intent to make you happy…you can feel when it’s been made with love. And infused with good vibes!
Tune into your vibration
You are what you eat. If there are foods you eat which make you feel sluggish, bloated, sad or acidic then you’re getting signs from your body that they are not right for you. Pay attention. Become a seeker of what connects you more fully to yourself and this earth, and a good place to start is with food!
