The Zesty Heart

Life is better with skinned knees and broken hearts

What does it mean to have a Zesty Heart? It’s like ripping down your favourite trail—Exciting, thrilling, terrifying and when it’s over you wanna get back on right away.

When you’re attacking the trail, it’s kinda fun to scare yourself a bit and teeter on your comfort zone—right? Pushing yourself allows you to have new experiences, learn about yourself, feel alive, and it makes the ride SO worthwhile. Continue Reading…

It’s the gravel in your guts and the spit in your eye

As Johnny Cash’s song “A boy named Sue” goes, “this world is rough and if you’re gonna make it, you gotta be tough”.  When you stumble, crash and bail hard, what is it that gives you the strength to get up, wipe the dust off and remount? Into the forest, to lose my mind and find my soul

By harnessing the life-improving power of the outdoors, Kula and I have made it through the rainy gloom of winter on the wet coast in relatively high spirits. Through silent, contemplative hikes or the occasional frosty bike ride, we took at least an hour a day to go hang out in the woods.

However, breaking free of what’s comfortable is an ongoing, step-by-step journey. It’s not always easy and you have to consciously keep embracing expansion.

No zest for the wicked: How cycling taught me perseverance

cycling-perseverance-zesty-life-rescue-project

My heart is racing, legs are burning, I’m sweating and suffering. I’ve eaten my last gel, ran out of water and the rider I was chasing has long since vanished into the distance.

At this point it crosses my mind to quit, head to the cafe’ and kick back with an Americano. I think I’ve gone as hard as I could… but the truth is 99% of the time you can always go harder and push further. It comes down to mindset.

Gettin Dialed: Prioritizing your passion

zesty-life-dial-your-passions

The two biggest objections I here when I talk to people about living the Zesty Life, and enjoying your passions, “I don’t have time.” or “I don’t know what my passion is”. Both of those statements are b.s.

When you evaluate exactly how you spend your average week, I assure you that you can carve out at least two to four hours to spend for yourself. And what is your passion: it’s what you’re talking about, the topic or activity or idea that dominates a significant amount of your thoughts and time. It’s what floats around in your subconcious without pursuing it or looking for it.
