The lovin’ sproutful

Do you believe in magic? Well, you’re going to soil your plants when you hear this…broccoli sprouts have 50X the nutrients of mature broccoli!

That’s right! Seeds, beans, legumes, and grains, which when in sprouted form, aren’t just a topping for some hippie sandwich, they contain a significant amount of protein as well as highly concentrated levels of micronutrients compared to the mature food counterpart.

What the sprout?

A sprout is at the transitional stage between seed and plant. “Sprouts” are the product obtained from the germination of seeds , harvested before the development of true leaves. When sprouted, almost all nutrients are fully available and various antioxidants occur at higher concentrations, making sprouts a “functional food”.

Easy, Cheap, Healthy

There’s a common perception that eating healthy costs more money—and the idea of growing your own food is way too labour intensive.  I’m here to tell you—beyond any sprout—that even the most clumsy, unpracticed, dirt-poor human can eat cheap and healthy!

Sprouts are the cheapest and most convenient source of complete nourishment. Sprouting allows you to have fresh whole foods grown on your kitchen counter in a few days. This is especially beneficial to learn during the uncertain times we’re facing in the world today…

Radish sprouts Liver supporting radish is high in vitamin A, vitamin C and calcium.

Broccoli sprouts Known to have potent anti-cancer and anti-aging properties.

Pea shoots — Fresh cut pea sprouts (or shoots) contain vitamins and minerals including folate and Vitamin A, as well as chlorophyll, approximately 20% protein, and are one of the highest in vitamin C content!

Lentil sprouts — Vegan protein!  These powerful sprouts are 26 percent protein.

Sunflower Sprouts — High in vitamin E, which, in synergy with vitamin C, helps reduce blood pressure, increase the elasticity of arteries and prevent heart disease.

Buckwheat sprouts A health promoting nutritive sprout high in rutin, a bioflavinoid that can help to strengthen blood vessels.

Here are a few good reasons to eat organic sprouts:

  1. It has been estimated that there can be up to 100 times more enzymes in sprouts than mature plants.
  2. The quality of protein is higher when sprouted
  3. The fibre content is higher when a seed is sprouted
  4. You get more essential fatty acids in a sprouted seed than the mature vegetable
  5. Minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, bind to protein and become more usable
  6. Sprouts have oxygenizing and alkalizing effects on your body
  7. Sprouts are cheap! Seeds cost pennies per week, so there really is no excuse for not eating healthier.
  8. Sprouts can grow them right on your windowsill, therefore you know EXACTLY what you’re eating!

How To Sprout Your Own Sprouts

What You Need:

  • A thoroughly cleaned mason jar
  • A piece of fine mesh or a piece from an old pair of pantyhose big enough to cover the top of the jar (cheesecloth doesn’t work very well for this because sometimes the seeds get caught in the material.)
  • Sprouting seeds
  • Water
