Fly Fishing & The Art of Letting Go

Be still like the mountains and flow like the river

It was a stunning orange sunrise as I began walking the river’s edge, quietly searching for the perfect spot to be in solitude—with Kula of course!

Navigating the shore, while simultaneously navigating the tug of emotions inside my heart. Somehow no matter how hard you try to forget, life’s experiences seep into crevices of your psyche, and settle into the depths of your being. Like a river, they’re carried with you through space and time, tumbling beneath the surface. Continue Reading…

The Wild Zest : There are no rules

rebel-personality-mountain-biking-zesty-life

I’m not crazy, I’m just colourful

When most people think of a “rebel,” they think of a troublemaker–someone who doesn’t like to follow rules and enjoys causing disruption.

Rebels aren’t just badasses that drive fast and cause mischief. They break rules in order to explore new ideas, uncharted territory, and create positive change. They create the friction required to test alternative ways of doing things that can lead to better solutions. Rebels conjure up creative solutions by balancing experimentation with a curious mind, and by tempering experience with a humble beginners approach, continually asking, “Why do we always do things this way?” and “Who are you to say I can’t do it?”.  They understand that if you play by the rules or think you know it all already, you lose the ability to break new ground. The Art of Risk-Taking

Take the risk or lose the chance

Many of life’s greatest achievements require stepping outside our comfort zone. Whether it’s tackling a technical trail feature, overcoming a fear of starting a business, investing money in your future, or putting yourself out there for a relationship—many of life’s most rewarding experiences come as a result of taking risks.

The fear of doing something wrong is a huge factor that holds people back, and so we often choose the safer approach and just stick with what’s worked in the past. The question is what is good risk-taking and what is bad? Continue Reading…

Volunteering: The Cure for a Long Face

Namasneigh

Arriving at Second Chance Cheekye Ranch, Sarah and I toss our phones in the truck and I set off down the long dirt road to the barn. We’ve both had a rough week, and are ready to do some “meditative shit shoveling” as I call it.

Arriving at the first paddock, we are greeted by a few horses poking their heads over the fence. For having such long faces, I’m always surprised how these animals are so sweet and gentle. Being from a rescue ranch, many of these horses have experienced a variety of trauma; from neglect and abuse, to rejection for being old, lame or injured. Continue Reading…

Beyond the Treeline: The Courage to Stand Alone

Reach new heights

Much like the tallest tree in the forest, when you stand out from the rest, you’re at risk of exposing yourself to the most resistance. We learn early in life that fitting in keeps us safe. But what we don’t realize is that while being unremarkable may keep us below the turbulence, it doesn’t allow us to grow, to reach new heights, and to see beyond our limitations; and it doesn’t usually lead to happiness or satisfaction. Nope, nope, nope, yup, nope

Online dating is so superficial, isn’t it?! With endless matches ripe for the swiping, you’d think finding the one would be a walk in the park. Yet, after yet another tragic date and a referral to the physiotherapist for your inflamed Tinder finger, you’re still single.

So, how can you go about finding a real connection in this digital age? Well, I’m not exactly sure, as I’ve just been yanked out of the hurt locker by friends to scope out the dating scene, and it looks pretty grim. Continue Reading…
